Performance Appraisal by Using Appraisal by Results or Management By Objectives / Targeted Performance Management

Modern Performance Appraisal deploys a methodology called Performance Appraisal by Results which is simply the appraisal of individual staff performance on a continuing systematic basis in relation to mutually agreed objectives, set at the beginning of the year.

This type of appraisal is based on the Management by Objectives where managerial performance are evaluated in terms of verifiable objectives.

Very often, it has many names likeĀ  Targeted Performance, Individual Performance Management, etc.

Some of the major features of Appraisal by Results are as follows:

  • The basis of such appraisal is based on performance against mutually agreed targets

  • It is a method of continuous performance of each individual staff through feedback, guidance and counseling in periodical meetings throughout the year

  • It aims to develop the staff performance instead of merely evaluating it nor using to pin-points the weakness of the staff.

  • As it is based on mutually agreed targets between the staff and his/her supervisor, it is actually a participative method of performance appraisal.

  • The mutually agreed targets are agreed in advance re: at beginning of the year and an agreed programme is evolved
